Product description

Jon Benson, the co-author of Fit Over 40, was “sick, fat and slowly dying” about five years ago when heJon Benson, Before and After “accidentally stumbled onto a simple secret that not only took off the excess weight and saved me from an early grave, but also exploded my energy and health to levels I never even dreamed possible.”

The “simple secret?”

Role modeling.

Rather than reinvent the lose-weight-and-get-fit wheel, Benson decided it made more sense to study people who already had blazed that trail.

The ultimate result was Fit Over 40, which features the stories of 52 over-40 men and women who have overcome daunting odds to achieve remarkable health and fitness. Benson’s ebook is a sort of “Profiles in Courage” for people looking for role models in the battle against obesity and poor health.

Here are three examples of those profiles:

Grandmother** A 77-year-old grandmother who trains and competes in bodybuilding with her 48-year-old daughter.

Chicago man** A 46-year-old formerly morbidly obese man from Chicago who lost 130 pounds in one year and now competes in skyscraper stair-climbing races – including the race in the Sears Tower, the tallest building in the U.S. – and consistently places in the top 8 percent of the field.

Man, 62** A 62-year-old man who looks better today than he did at 22, despite a destructive detour into booze and drugs, and congestive heart failure at age 48.

Benson says his research “was not based on reading or mere observation, but on sleeves-rolled-up, down-in-the trenches, up-close and personal work with many of these people, and exhaustive hours of interviewing with many others.”

As a result, he adds, he was able to get “a stunning peek inside their heads to find out how they think and inside their kitchens and gyms to understand how they eat and train.”

Despite his research, however, Benson decided that “mere imitation” of these heroes of his would not be enough. In fact, because everyone has a different genetic makeup, trying to imitate someone else “can sometimes even be the cause of failure.”

The “missing link,” he decided, was customization. He had to take the “master mind model” that consisted of his profiles in courage, and customize it by adding what was uniquely his.

He also picked up a co-author, Tom Venuto, is a friend, author of the best selling diet and fitness ebook, Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle.

As a result, Fit Over 40 consists not only of the 52 success stories, but also of a chapter about Benson’s journey from fat and sick to fit and health, plus a chapter by Venuto about nutrition, training and mental conditioning for staying lean and muscular at any age.

Our Recommendation

Fit Over 40Some reviewers of Fit Over 40 have criticized the book, saying that although the 52 profiles are inspirational, Benson offers no specific weight loss or get fit plans.

Although Benson concedes the point (“This is not a diet book,” he says), he argues that the lack of a specific diet or exercise plan is actually his ebook’s strength.

Put another way, in my view that lack of specificity is exactly the point Benson is trying to make. The best explanation of what I mean can be found in the foreword of the book by Richard A. Winett, PhD, of Ageless-Athletes.com.

“There are no miracle diets or supplements or magical exercise routines offered in this book,” Dr. Winett writes. “There is no promise that you can transform your health and physique in a few easy weeks. There are no fold-out wall charts showing routines you need to blindly follow.

“What is contained in Fit Over 40 is far more enriching and rewarding.”

Dr. Winett says Benson’s ebook features “52 unique approaches because there really isn’t one, and only one, best approach (emphasis mine) that then can be adopted in ‘cookie-cutter’ fashion.”

Rather, there are 52 “best approaches.” And you have the opportunity to find an approach that is best suited for you, or better yet, take pieces out of several of the approaches and construct your very own plan.

And this brings us to the core of what Benson’s book is really all about. Again, Dr. Winett explains it best:

“The ability to plan and successfully carry out an exercise and nutrition program contributes to a profound sense of self-mastery and self-efficacy.

“You can take the basic self-regulatory skills you’ve successfully used for exercise and nutrition and adapt them to other facets of your life. It’s in this way that the role models in this book can truly have a transformative effect on your life.”

Fit Over 40 gets 5 stars. I wish I could give it 10.

What Others Are Saying

I’ve got to admit I think the program “Fit over 40″ has got it right. I’m currently recuperating from a long term illness and only now able to start exercising to lose the weight I’ve managed to accumulate!!! But exercise, like diet, is not enough on its own a balance has to be made and I think your program seems to point the way forward. – Post on online forum

In the first section of the book Jon Benson tells his story. It is in essence an expanded version of the Fit Over 40 role model bios. Jon has had a very interesting ride in life and shares his insights in a personal and strategic way.

One of the things I like most about this book is there are many approaches to achieving fitness. Climbing Stairs and eating apples and chicken breasts are not for everyone. I believe that seeing how several different people have approached fitness is a powerful tool. – Actual user comment
